An Engineer's Journey into the Renaissance

My name is Steve Beisswanger. My work and academic backgrounds span aeronautical engineering, business, and public relations. While I am not formally trained as an art historian, I have long been deeply curious about art and the creative process itself. The juxtaposition of artistic achievement and scientific inquiry during some of history's most transformative periods has long been a particular fascination of mine.

Curious by nature, I am an avid reader. Books play a central role in my ongoing journey of learning, and reading is my primary hobby (along with the weekly hockey games that I continue to enjoy).

My fascination with Italy's artistic heritage began in 2020, as my family was preparing for an extended stay in the Molise region. What started as reading about Ancient Rome and the complex history of its empire gradually led me forward through time, toward a remarkable period in which ideas, discoveries, and creative expression seemed to converge. New modes of philosophical thought, scientific breakthroughs, evolving political ideas, and dramatic transformations in art and architecture all unfolded within a relatively short span of time, concentrated in a handful of extraordinary Italian cities.

In the Renaissance, I found a period where art, history, politics, philosophy, and human ambition intersected in fascinating ways. I was completely captivated.

While the evolution of Western civilization had held some interest for me during my school years, it never resonated as deeply as it does now.

Then came the pandemic. All travel plans were halted and, like for so many others, normal life was abruptly put on pause. The enforced stillness of lockdowns and restrictions led to a more sedentary existence—and provided an unexpected opportunity to read, reflect, and learn more deeply. This period allowed me to deepen my understanding and broaden my perspective. My exploration of the Renaissance accelerated, and it has remained a source of inspiration ever since.

Today, I hope to share some of what I have discovered with others who are equally curious about this extraordinary period of history, and who may wish to embark on their own journey of exploration, guided by the same questions and discoveries that have shaped mine.
